Gabriel Eze, the member representing Isi-Uzo State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, has left the Labour Party (LP) for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He cited the LP’s ongoing internal crises and his admiration for Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership as reasons for his move.
Eze announced his defection during Tuesday’s plenary, after Speaker Uche Ugwu read his resignation letter from the LP. Explaining his choice, he described the LP as fractured and ineffective. “As I am talking to you, Labour Party is a dead party almost,” he said. “I made wider consultations. I switched into action by meeting my constituents, holding meetings, calling some people that matter in the Labour Party on how to resolve.”
He continued, “After I found out that it is not something that could be resolved, I started asking them which way forward because I am here to represent them, to make laws and move motions and speak on their behalf as their mouthpiece, and they advised that I move to a better place—and that better place is joining PDP.” Though he expressed regret for leaving the party that elected him, Eze said he had no other option.

The lawmaker also praised Governor Mbah’s transformative work. “Our governor made a statement some time ago that he came into power not for government as usual but unusual,” he said. “And he said that everybody should learn how to sacrifice. Myself, who is representing Isi-Uzo, seeing these—the words of the governor in action—then decided to support him.”
He noted the governor’s achievements. “The governor has moved into action in the area of security, in the area of agriculture, in the area of health infrastructure,” Eze said. “He is also doing wonders in roads and every aspect that affects us as Ndi Enugu. He is working tirelessly to turn Enugu into London. I have no option than to join hands to support him.”
This defection follows closely after Chief Chijioke Edeoga, the LP’s 2023 governorship candidate from the same local government, also joined the PDP just days ago.
