The Enugu State Government has announced August 16, 2025, as the date for the burial of Nigeria’s football legend, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as “Chairman.”
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, who also chairs the Central Planning Committee (CPC) for the burial, the government confirmed that a series of events have been lined up in collaboration with Chukwu’s family to honour the late icon.
Chukwu, who captained the Super Eagles to their historic first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980, was described as a towering figure in Nigerian football.
He also led Enugu Rangers to domestic and continental glory in the 1970s and later managed both the Rangers and the national team, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, discipline, and passion that continues to inspire athletes across generations.

The burial programme will commence on Sunday, August 10, with a service of songs at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.
A night of tributes will follow on Wednesday, August 13, at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, while a colloquium titled “Life and Times of Christian Chukwu, the Chairman” is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, at the Enugu Sports Club.
On Friday, August 15, a novelty football match will be played at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in his honour, followed by a wake at his country home in Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area.
The burial ceremony and lying-in-state will take place at Obe on Saturday, August 16, starting at 9:00 a.m. The weeklong events will conclude with a thanksgiving service at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Obe, on Sunday, August 17.
The Central Planning Committee, which includes prominent figures from government and the sporting community, called on admirers, fans, and associates of Chukwu to participate in the events to celebrate the life of a true national sports icon.
