The Enugu East Traditional Rulers Council at the weekend convened a joint meeting of the political, academic and business leaders in the area as part of a bold move to foster enduring peace, harmony and unity in Nike land.
The meeting which had the representatives of various political parties in attendance was principally aimed at achieving a power sharing and rotation formula that would reduce socio-political tension and bad blood in the local government during elections.
The traditional rulers presented a number of proposals, which they said would harmonize various political interests and engender enduring power sharing formula that will be satisfactory to all sections of the local government.
The stakeholders after deliberations inaugurated a six-man technical Committee to fine-tune the proposals for greater acceptability and adoption.
The technical committee, which had September 26, 2024 to submit its report had Clement Okwor, a former Secretary to the Enugu State Government and former Head of Service as Chairman. Other members are Kingsley Anike, Dennis Agbo, Dr. Chijioke Okolo, Amaechi Nnamchi and Ikechukwu Okoh.
The Committee was charged with the responsibility of rephrasing the ideology of the Royal fathers and come up with “a resolution that will be more consistent with the political norms in Enugu state; to remove the areas inconsistent with the laws of Enugu state; and to incorporate ideas that will support and foster unity, progress, peace and posterity in Nike land.”
Responding on behalf of the committee members, the chairman Sir Clement Okwor, thanked the royal fathers for the initiative and described it as the most serious effort that has been made to establish orderliness in power rotation in the area.
“There have been various efforts in the past and each one comes and melts away but I see that the slogan of our Governor, ‘tomorrow is here’ is actually happening in Enugu East.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairmanship candidate in the forthcoming LG election in the state, Pastor Beloved-Dan Anike thanked the traditional rulers for the meeting and proposal and assured that if elected chairman of Enugu East LGA, he would help to implement the final resolution of the stakeholders.
