Nigerian biochemist, Dr. Ige Komolafe, has emphasized the medicinal potency of the “Elephant’s Ear Fern” —scientifically known as Platycerium angolense—in treating infections, inflammation, and several other ailments.

In a recent study he co-authored, titled “Biological Activities and Phytochemical Constituents of Platycerium angolense (Welwex Hook)”, Komolafe reported that the plant contains key bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and antioxidants, which validate its effectiveness against infections and inflammatory conditions.

He explained that laboratory analyses of the plant’s extract revealed notable antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, affirming its long-standing role as a reliable treatment in traditional medicine.

Observers say Komolafe’s findings come at a crucial time, as rising antibiotic resistance, high drug costs, and concerns over adverse reactions continue to push scientists worldwide toward exploring plant-based alternatives.

Reports indicate that countries across Europe and the United States are turning to natural compounds to manage chronic conditions linked to oxidative stress, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Similarly, several nations in Africa and the Middle East are increasingly relying on herbal medicines as affordable and accessible treatment options.

Komolafe noted that the renewed global interest in medicinal plants reflects a shift toward therapies that support the body’s natural healing mechanisms—without the environmental burden associated with synthetic drug production.

Pharmaceutical experts also stress that plant-derived compounds offer a more sustainable path, as they often eliminate the chemical waste generated through conventional drug synthesis.

“Our work on Platycerium angolense helped establish key insights into its antioxidant, nephroprotective, and cardioprotective mechanisms,” he stated.

“By tracing plant-based biochemical pathways, we continue to show how natural compounds combat oxidative stress and organ damage. The relevance of this study endures, demonstrating how research on local Nigerian herbs can inform global scientific progress and highlight nature’s ongoing potential for future medical solutions.”

He further reiterated the urgency of building scientific evidence that connects local knowledge with global health needs—an approach reflected in the recent publication of their findings in the Journal of Medicinal Plants Research.

“Nature still holds answers to some of our biggest medical challenges. We only need to study it with the seriousness it deserves,” he added.
