Electoral Act: Reform must reflect Nigerians’ trust – Sowore

Omoyele Sowore

By Lawrence Agbo

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has called for clear provisions on electronic transmission in the ongoing amendment to the Electoral Act, reaffirming the need for transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system.

Sowore stated that electoral reforms are expected to reflect the best interests of Nigerians and guarantee free, fair and credible elections while speaking on Morning Brief on Channels Television.

He noted that while INEC’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal allows Nigerians to monitor polling unit results, the law must provide clarity on how electronic transmission is implemented.

“What Nigerians want is a system that builds trust. Once results are uploaded directly from polling units, citizens can independently verify them,” he said.

Also, he urged the people to continue to participate while lawmakers reconcile the two versions of the amendment bill.

“Continuous engagement is important. Nigerians must understand how these reforms will work in practice,” he added.
