Tragedy struck at Ikeja, Lagos, during last Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections as elderly couple were found dead in their house.
Their housemaid was seriously injured fuelling speculations that the couple were murdered. The election day tragedy threw the entire neighbourhood into instant mourning.
Though no arrest has been made, the Lagos Police Command said it has launched a manhunt for the killers.
The police said they were currently investigating the circumstances that led to the death of an elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Egbeolu, in their apartment in Ikeja, on Saturday. It was learnt that the couple, who were gruesomely murdered by a yet- to-be identified assassin, were very responsible and easygoing people.
A police source said the incident occurred at number 1 Adefolu Drive, near New World Hotel, Allen Avenue, adding that their bodies have been evacuated to a public mortuary. The police officer said the bodies of the deceased couple were found following a distress call that was sent to some neighbours in the area.
It was learnt that following the receipt of the distress call, some of the neighbours rushed to the house where they found the Egbeolus dead and their domestic staff severely beaten.
“The neighbours immediately called 112 and were awaiting the response of the police,” a witness who did not want her name mentioned said.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, however, did not give further clarifications.
