Ekanem storms to 100m world lead at Dynamic Athletics Outdoor Meet 2024

Consider Ekanem Saturday stormed to a 10.10 seconds 100m world lead at the Dynamic Athletics Outdoor Meet 2024 at the Navy Ground in Ojo, Lagos.

The 19 year old, trained by former African champion and record holder, Seun Ogunkoya, was one of the big favourites to win after running 6.70 seconds to win the 60m race earlier and he fulfilled expectations.

His time is also a huge personal best, bettering the 10.22 seconds he ran six months ago at the Yabatech Sport Complex in Yaba, Lagos.

He also supplanted Claude Emmanuel Itoungue Bogognie of Cameroon (10.13) as the fastest man in the event so far this year.

Consider is following in the footsteps of the man he relegated to second position, Enoch Adegoke who made history as the first wholly home-based sprinter to qualify for the Olympics in 2021.

Like Consider is doing, Adegoke opened his 2021 campaign with a 10.16 world lead at the time and ended up breaking 10 seconds (9.98) in the event to become the first man in 25 years to run in the final of the 100m event at the Olympics.

At the Navy Ground in Ojo, Adegoke opened his 2024 campaign with 10.28 seconds, the second fastest time of the day while Ekiti boy, Fakorede Adekalu ran 10.30 seconds to emerge the third fastest.

Meanwhile, Olayinka Olajide emerged the fastest woman at the meet, speeding home first in 11.37 seconds, a huge lifetime best and fourth fastest in the world so far this year.

Olajide, who will be 22 in October, came to the meet with a personal best of 11.66, which she ran in 2021 at the Yabatech Sport Complex.

The World Athletics approved Dynamic Athletics Outdoor Meet 2024 is the first meet Nigerian athletes at home have had the opportunity to compete in with less than two months to the African Games in Ghana.
