The recent assault of a student at Igbinedion Education Centre has been described as a “wake-up call” by Kassim Afegbua, Edo State Commissioner for Information, following the expulsion of the students involved.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, Afegbua said the incident highlights the need for strict discipline, monitoring, and internal vigilance in schools.
“It is a wake-up call to parents and also teachers because one would expect that an educational centre like this should naturally have its own code of ethics in terms of discipline, monitoring and internal vigilance over its students,” he said.
The shocking incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, prompted immediate action by the school management, which expelled the students responsible.

Afegbua confirmed that the police have been directed to ensure the students are properly arrested and face legal consequences for their actions.
“We took an action that led to the expulsion of the students involved. We also directed the police to make sure the students are properly arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
He added that if the video had not been recorded and circulated, the incident might never have come to light, emphasizing the importance of transparency and vigilance in educational institutions.
The case has ignited a broader conversation in Edo State about student safety, bullying, and the responsibilities of schools and parents in safeguarding children.
