The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Segun Aina, has described the Board as a “fantastic institution” with a highly reformed and transparent system, structurally sound operations and a committed workforce.
Aina stated this at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Management and IT Retreat of the Board in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, stressing that the achievements recorded by his administration in its first month were largely due to the contributions of staff.
The Registrar described the retreat as the first major event of his administration and an opportunity to bring together a cross-section of the Board’s functionaries to review its operations and chart a new course.
He was optimistic that the retreat would enable JAMB to optimise its operational and service delivery processes, while strengthening teamwork among its workforce.
According to him, the reforms being implemented by his administration are aimed at building trust and reducing the stress, anxiety and uncertainty often experienced by candidates and parents during UTME registration and admission placement.
“The little we have done in one month is not just my idea but a collective one based on inputs from staff, as I inherited a fantastic institution,” Aina said.
He said his administration would consolidate the gains recorded by his predecessors over more than four decades while opening new frontiers for the examination and admissions body.
The Registrar restated his commitment to five major reform areas, namely Integrity, Service, Governance, Technology and Partnerships, which he said would drive the Board’s transformation agenda.
He identified Technology Review, Unified Customer Service, ISO Certification, a Paperless Regime, UTME Pre-Registration Mobile App, Strategic Communication and Staff Welfare as flagship initiatives under the reform programme.
Aina further described the initiatives as “non-negotiable”, stressing that they were designed to improve the experience of JAMB’s candidates and other stakeholders while strengthening the institution’s internal processes.
He said the Board’s strategic roadmap, titled “JAMB 2031: Building Trust, Reducing Trauma”, would guide its development agenda between 2026 and 2031.
“Our vision is to make JAMB Africa’s most trusted, innovative and accessible assessment and admissions institution, built on strong systems rather than individuals. Enduring institutions are built on shared values rather than individual personalities,” he said.
Aina urged participants at the retreat to take advantage of the gathering to contribute ideas that would advance the Board, adding that the event was also designed to foster stronger bonds among staff.
He said the retreat offered staff an opportunity to work together as a team and family, as well as unwind and prepare for the tasks ahead.
In a goodwill message, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaboration, Prof Anthony Eneji Egrinya, congratulated Aina on his appointment as JAMB Registrar.
Egrinya commended the Board for organising the retreat and described Aina’s appointment as an indication of the Federal Government’s determination to reposition JAMB as a truly digital-compliant agency.
He noted that the appointment of a digitally savvy Registrar was particularly significant at a time when technology had become central to improving the efficiency and accessibility of public institutions.
