Dr. Hope Okwa, a veteran drilling consultant and engineer with 32 years of experience, has emerged as a leading figure in driving cost-efficient well delivery in Nigeria and beyond.
With an extensive career spanning major international oil companies such as Shell, BP, Saudi Aramco, and Chevron, Dr. Okwa has cultivated deep expertise in drilling engineering and project management. His work has also benefited Nigerian operators including SHELL, AMNI, FIRST E&P, SEPLAT, ELCREST, NEWCROSS, MONIPULO, ARADEL, WALTERSMITH, EXCEL E&P, and Addax Petroleum, along with other marginal field operators—cementing his reputation as a trusted technical advisor for complex drilling operations.
Dr. Okwa’s technical competence is reinforced by a strong academic foundation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Benin and holds two master’s degrees—one in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-Watt University and another in Innovation & Entrepreneurship from HEC Paris. He has also completed a Doctor of Engineering degree in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering from The George Washington University.
Furthermore, he underwent a five-year mentored training at Shell, resulting in the awards of Shell Drilling Courses ROUND 1 and ROUND 2 Certifications, which strengthened his practical expertise and leadership in drilling operations.
As Drilling Project Manager and co-founder of H-PTP Energy Services, Dr. Okwa specializes in delivering safe, reliable, and low-cost wells, achieving cost reductions of up to 40-60% for Nigerian exploration and production operators. His consultancy, HD Okwa Drilling Services Ltd, provides technical drilling solutions that enhance performance, reduce risks, and drive profitability.
Beyond his technical and entrepreneurial prowess, Dr. Okwa serves as a volunteer mentor for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, Canada, and for the Society of Petroleum Engineers International (SPE), where he holds the record for having the highest number of professional mentees globally.
