The Dove Healthcare Awards 2025 has highlighted a growing focus on leadership, accountability and systemic reform in Nigeria’s health sector. Hosted by the Dove Healthcare Foundation, the event brought together top political leaders, medical practitioners, and healthcare administrators to celebrate excellence while fostering dialogue on governance, equity, and community health interventions.
The event, held recently at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, recognised three state governors for their transformative contributions: Borno State’s, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum for rebuilding healthcare infrastructure amid insurgency, Osun State’s, Sen. Dr. Ademola Adeleke for expanding access to rural communities, and Yobe State’s, Hon. Dr. Mai Mala Buni for advancing equitable healthcare delivery. The awards also celebrated institutional leadership, with Prof. Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo of University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan, honored for innovations in medical education and patient care, and Dr. Paul Agboola of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital recognized for advancing mental healthcare services.
Specialized care and pharmaceutical regulation were highlighted through awards to Dr. Olalekan Olatise of Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre and Babashehu Ahmed, Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, reflecting the sector’s focus on non-communicable diseases and drug safety. Ms. Omolola Fakeye JP, the first female Director of Administration at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, was celebrated for breaking barriers in healthcare leadership, while Alhaji A. A. Rano of AA Rano Group received recognition for sustained community health support.
The ceremony also emphasized public engagement through a democratic voting process, reinforcing citizen participation in defining healthcare excellence. With its blend of recognition, dialogue, and policy-oriented focus, the Dove Healthcare Awards 2025 signaled a clear shift toward systemic improvement, underscoring the critical role of leadership, collaboration, and innovation in advancing Nigeria’s health sector.
The awards further reinforced Nigeria’s growing international healthcare presence, building on past recognitions of institutions in the United Kingdom and Belgium. By celebrating both local and global contributions, the ceremony underscored the country’s potential to compete on the international stage and highlighted the importance of adopting global best practices in improving healthcare delivery at home. Organizers emphasized that Nigeria’s health system can benefit from such cross-border knowledge exchange while showcasing homegrown innovation to a wider audience.
Attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose, recognizing that sustained progress in healthcare requires more than individual achievements. The Dove Healthcare Awards 2025 demonstrated that meaningful change depends on political will, institutional accountability, private sector engagement, and active public participation. As the platform continues to grow, it is positioning itself as a key driver for systemic reform and a catalyst for the next generation of healthcare leaders committed to building a stronger, more equitable health system for all Nigerians.
