Delta State government has advised the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in last Saturday’s election, Ovie Omo-Agege, not to waste his money hiring lawyers to challenge the victory of Sheriff Oborevwori of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in court.
Commissioner for Information in the state, Charles Aniagwu who gave the advice at a press conference in Asaba,said Oborevwori won the election fair and square and that his victory cannot be upturned.
He urged Omo-Agege to channel his resources towards rebuilding his party.
“We urge our brother to save the money that he would want to use to hire lawyers and use it to either begin to rebuild his party that was seriously battered on account of the election or use it to make more impact in the various localities. We plead with Omo-Agege too join hands with Sheriff because we don’t see how he is going to upturn this overwhelming victory that Deltans have given to us,” he said.
In reacting to the declaration of the PDP candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as winner of the election, Omo-Agege had alleged that there were several infractions, vowing to challenge the outcome in the court.
But Aniagwu said the election was peaceful, except in areas perceived to be the base of the APC candidate.
He said Omo-Agege, who is Deputy Senate President, would have fared better than winning just four councils if his party had fielded him in the House of Representatives election.
Meanwhile, governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Delta State, Great Ogboru, has congratulated PDP’s Sheriff Oborevwori for wining the Delta State poll.
In a statement, yesterday, he said: “The 2023 governorship election has come and gone. We witnessed a very high degree of voter apathy, violence, intimidation, coercion and unprecedented level of vote buying never seen before. It is a major set back in the evolution of democratic tenets and a threat to future elections. But there is a declared winner and we must accept it so. May I therefore, use this opportunity to congratulate Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his victory over several obstacles in this election. Congratulations as we wish you all the best as governor of Delta State.”
Daily Sun learnt it was the first time Ogboru was congratulating a governor-elect in the state as he had always disputed the outcomes of previous polls since 2003 when he started contesting on the platform of various opposition parties.
