A don, Prof. (Mrs) Augustinah Duyilemi, has stressed the need for proper recognition of women like their male counterparts.
Duyilemi asserted during an award presentation organized by the Centre for Gender and Health Equity of the Ondo State-owned University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, for some outstanding women in the Ondo Kingdom.
The award recipients were said to have distinguished themselves in their different fields of endeavours. Prof. Duyilemi said the centre was a unit promoting gender equality within the university and society at large.
This, she said, encompassed a wide range of initiatives including research, policy advocacy, education, training, and community outreach, among others.
She said: “The purpose of the celebration is to showcase women that are successful in their careers and have impacted the lives of others in the society.
“Such women are seen to be highly empowered and could serve as role models to the younger ones.”
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adesegun Fatusi, said the programme was part of the deliberate efforts by the University to ensure a mutually rewarding relationship with the community.
“I need to add here that our gathering here is not a happenstance. It’s part of our deliberate efforts to impact positively the society where we operate from. It’s part of our town and gown relational strategies to ensure that we have a mutually rewarding relationship,” he stressed.
The awardees included Justice Helen Moronkeji Ogunwumiju, Dr (Mrs) Victoria Modupe Oluwole, Chief (Mrs) Opeyemi Oyedele, Chief (Mrs ) Olufunke Iluyemi, Princess Gbonjubola Adebayo, Mrs Itiola Dorcas Akinlosotu, Professor Ronke Ogunmakin and Dr (Mrs) Ethel Adunni Adeloye.
Others are Pastor Arabia Surulola Faturoti, Mrs Catherine Omolayo Akinrimisi, Dr. Rhoda Makinde, Dr (Mrs) Toyin Adisa, Mrs Deborah Muinat Mimiko and Mrs Beatrice Adebolowomi Akinkuotu.
