A don, Prof. Abidemi Tella, has charged health professionals to uphold professional identity and maximise networking as a tool to excel in their profession.
Specifically, he urged physiotherapists in the country, especially new entrants into the profession to uphold the ethics of the profession for the common good of the people.
Delivering a lecture entitled, “Your future in Physiotherapy: Building a professional identity and network,” at the fourth induction ceremony of physiotherapists at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, he charged physiotherapists to be guided by the rules guiding the profession and respect their identities.
Professor Tella who teaches at the department of Physiotherapy, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, said: “Professional identity entails knowing how you perceive yourself and how others see you in your professional roles; your values, beliefs and behaviours as a physiotherapist and clinical skills, commitment to ethical practice and dedication to continuous learning.”

While she considered professional identity to be important because it helps to build self-confidence, enhance career advancement, aid ethical practice and build resilience, she stressed that networking is infinitely more important.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) congratulated the inductees and commended their dedication to their studies while in the university.
The Registrar, Medical Rehabilitation, Therapists Board of Nigeria, Prof Rufai Yusuf Ahmad, advised the inductees to be steadfast and carry out their practice with sincerity and honesty.
The Dean, Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation of the university, Professor Teslim Onigbinde expressed confidence in the ability of the new physiotherapists to deliver well in their profession, having instilled in them thorough professional training.
