Medical Doctors under the aegis of Nigerian Association of medical and Dental Academic (NAMDA) has said that the union will commenced strike action after the 3 weeks extension of ultimatum earlier issued to federal government .
The doctors had issued an earlier ultimatum to federal government over non prioritization of medical education/ training of despite the dearth of Medical and Dental Doctors and “jappa” syndrome in the country.
However, the Directorate of State Security Services and other friends of the union intervened but the federal government did not hearken to their demands at the expiration of the ultimatum .
In a communique jointly signed by the National President of the Association Dr Nosa Lancy Orhue and Secretary Prof Aniekan Peter after an emergency meeting and made available to Journalists in Uyo , the Association stated that it would would commence strike on 31 August, 2026 after extension of the ultimatum for 3 weeks to consider whether the federal government will hearken to their demands.
The communique reads in parts
“The Emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) of the Union met on the 5th of August 2026 to deliberate on critical issues affecting members, update on engagements with relevant stakeholders, and the the way forward at the expiration of the 21 days Ultimatum to the federal government.
“After extensive deliberations,
“E-NEC observed as follow:
“The reluctance of government to conclude negotiations with NAMDA.
” The patience and cooperation to ensure stability within the university system by NAMDA
” The none prioritisation of Medical Education/training despite the dearth of Medical and Dental doctors and the JAPA syndrome and
“The ongoing intervention by the Directorate of State Security Services (DSS) and some friends of NAMDA”
The Association therefore resolve to consider strike as the next action to draw attention of government

” Strike Timeline Consideration
” A three-week timeline extension was adopted and for a possible further consideration.
The final decision took into account critical factors including: Branch engagement, Government engagement and level of response and Positive intervention by the DSS and appeal by some friends of NAMDA
The emergency meeting further warned that the three-week extension period should be utilized by government to resolve all outstanding issues.
“Failure to achieve meaningful resolution at the expiration of the period ending on the 31st of August 2026, shall result in the declaration of a three-day warning strike to be announced by National Organizing Committee ( NOC)”.
It therefore directed other branches to mobilize members ahead of the planned strike .
“Branches were directed to engage their members by organising congress meetings and sensitization programmes.
“Evidence or report of mobilisation activities should be submitted to NEC through the Secretariat”.
