Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sylvester Alabi, in charge of the South West region, began a week-long assessment of the region recently. He emphasised police’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment, acknowledging that, while a crime-free society is unattainable, efforts are being intensified to improve safety in the South West.
At the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State, he urged officers to respect human rights in their duties, warning that any violation would be met with severe consequences. He said human rights abuse negatively impacts the police force image and stressed the importance of exemplary conduct and discipline to earn public respect and support.
Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, acknowledged the state security challenges due to its status as an industrial hub: “But the police command is effectively addressing these issues.”
Alabi also called on the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, to discuss police strategies for maintaining security in the state. Oba Gbadebo commended the police for their effective community policing and offered his blessings.
His tour included a courtesy visit to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who praised theNigeria Police Force for its role in securing life and property. Abiodun lauded the cooperation between the police and other security agencies, such as the Army, DSS, NSCDC, and Amotekun, which fostered peaceful atmosphere and attracted investors to the state.
He also commended the collaborative efforts of the Ogun, Oyo and Lagos state commands in reducing criminal activities on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He praised Alabi for his hands-on approach and thanked the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police for support and excellent work.
Alabi emphasised the need for engagement with stakeholders to ensure effective community policing. He noted that his visit was in line with the IGP’s directive for DIGs to assess regional security situations and devise strategies accordingly. Alabi expressed gratitude to Abiodun for his support and assured him that the police would continue to enhance security in the state.
Alabi acknowledged that while the South West faces challenges like kidnapping and cultism, it remains relatively peaceful compared to other regions. He reiterated the necessity of continuous strategic planning to address crime and assured that his team would focus on prevalent crime areas to ensure comprehensive security across the region.
