Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sir Mike Okiro has said there is need to strengthen democratic institutions, guarantee the independence of the judiciary and eradicate corruption in the overall interest of the country.

Okiro spoke at the National Democracy Day Summit organized by the JusticeNow International, in Abuja to commemorate Democracy Day.

The former IGP and chairman of the JusticeNow International Board, said a resilient Nigeria is one in which the institutions are strong, rule of law respected and citizens can trust in the society to protect them.

“Today, as we commemorate June 12 – a day that embodies the democratic spirit and the collective will of our people – we are reminded of the sacrifices made and the enduring hope for a nation where justice, equity, and prosperity are not just ideals, but lived realities for every citizen.

“June 12 is more than just a historical date; it is a powerful symbol of our potential, a testament to the fact that when Nigerians unite, transformative change is possible.JusticeNow International  was founded on the conviction that a truly just and equitable society is the bedrock of sustainable development.
