Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has granted pardon to 13 prison inmates from the Jos correctional centre to commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria
The governor , in announcing the measure, said he’s exercising powers conferred on him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and based on recommendations from the Plateau State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy .
Mutfwang, in a statement signed by the Director of Press Affairs, Gyang Bere, said, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, I, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Governor of Plateau State, Nigeria, after consultation with the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, do hereby exercise my power of Prerogative of Mercy.”
Four of the beneficiaries, Bitrus Gonkir, Umar Adams, Monday Pam, and Jibrin Ibrahim received absolute pardon.
Also Victor Pam will serve 1 year 8 months from approval date, Daniel Umar 2 years 11 months, Husaini Ya’u 2 years, and Dauda Joshua 5 years.
Additionally, Moses John will serve 1 year 2 months from approval date; while Nanfa Yusuf, Harisu Abdullahi, and Binsing Nden had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment.
Mutfwang said that the beneficiaries have shown remorse for their crimes, based on the recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The governor urged the public to focus on dialogue and reconciliation for a progressive and prosperous state, highlighting democracy as the best model for addressing national challenges.
