Emerging facts from the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police have given more insight into how a 37-yr-old suspect from Unenurhie community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state died.
Indeed, it was learnt that the deceased who was identified as Oyibo Diamond, did not die from torture or gunshot injury while in police custody but died as a result of an ailment he had prior to his arrest.

Given an insight into the details of the medical report conducted, the Police in a statement issued Saturday by its spokesperson in the state, Mr. Bright Edafe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)said there was no sign of bodily inflicted injuries on the deceased nor was there a sign of bullet wounds on any part of his body.

According to the statement; “The medical report conducted by Dr. Steve Ofioguma, at Ughelli Central hospital on January 2, 2024, it was revealed that the deceased had an underlying ailment he had been treating as a result of excessive drug abuses which had affected some vital organs of the body over the years “.

“The examination carried out before witnesses including; one Friday Diamond, deceased elder brother and President General (PG) of Evwreni clan, Mr. Kenneth Ukpebitere, in the presence of a family doctor, clearly shows that the deceased had been managing some health challenges long before the incident that led to his recent arrest”.

“Even after the report was released, the deceased family and the President General who represented the Evwreni clan held a meeting i ln the office of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) B Division, Ughelli, CSP Asanaenyi Ibok, where the family decided not to go ahead with further probe into the cause of deceased death because they were aware of his underlying ailment prior to his arrest”.

“It was even at that very meeting that the family solicited the assistance of the police on how to raise funds to establish the deceased wife in a trade so as to be able to cater for the five children left behind “, the statement disclosed.

It would be recalled that the deceased was arrested in connection to a kidnapping incident where the victim was later shot on the leg along the East-West highway close to Evwreni clan. The victim whose car was taken away by his abductors later had his leg amputated.

Acting to intel, the police at B Division, Ughelli were able to track the car to a church premises where it was kept and suspecting that police would be coming for its recovery, one of the kidnappers decided to take the car to another hideout but got chased by the police in the process. He was later arrested and detained at the police station.

In the course of investigation, one of his handset was reported to have rang repeatedly and the two numbers that engaged the phone were saved with “Car Dealer, Lagos’, and the second person was saved with the deceased name.

It was further gathered that this was what prompted the police to go after the deceased and got him arrested on December 20, 2023, to explain his relationship with the kidnap suspect. It was during the investigations that he later passed on.

The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Ughelli Central hospital mortuary.
