At least one person has been killed due to violent clashes between fishermen and herders in Uwheru community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Several others were said to have been injured during the hostilities that reportedly happened on Monday.
The injured victims are said to be receiving treatment in the hospital as at the time of this report.
Public Relations Officer of the state police command, DSP Bright Edafe who confirmed the clashes, could not however give further details.
Our correspondent learnt that the dead victim identified as Ofe Ekevwerho, gave up the ghost due to the multiple gunshot wounds he sustained
One Mr. Roland who is among those in the hospital, was also reported to have suffered some serious gunshot injuries.
Irked by the incident, folks from Uwheru and the neighbouring Unenurhie community barricaded the East West road in protest to register their grievances.
The angry protesters demanded justice for the deceased and injured victims, and called on both the state and federal governments to intervene in incessant clashes between the herdsmen and the local residents.
The agrarian Uwheru community is not strange to clashes between herdsmen and local residents, as the area has become a hotbed for such hostilities.
Although the cause of the latest clash is yet to be established, herders in the past were accused of carrying out unprovoked attacks on locals, denying farmers access to their farms.
The herders were also alleged to be depleting the economic base of locals by grazing on farmlands with their cattles.
