Following a protest that rocked Sokoto state on Saturday as a result of the arrest of the suspected killers of Deborah Yakubu, the Gombe state command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Sunday morning initiated a show of force while patrolling around communities in the state capital.
A team of about 12 police patrol vehicles with heavily armed men of the force were sighted at around 10 am crisscrossing streets in Tumfure community.
When contacted by Daily Sun ASP Mahid Muazu, the spokesperson of the command explained that the patrol was to show off force and ensure calmness among residents. He said: “This has always been on, whenever there is a threat to national security, we beef up security at the command level.
And going by what happened in Sokoto, one should know that we won’t just sit back and watch, we have to show that we are around and are up and doing to avert all sorts of threat,” Mahid told Daily Sun on phone.
He assured that the show had nothing to do with a suspected or planned protest in the state. “We don’t any threat or heard of any in Gombe state for now,” he added while stating that the command had embarked on sensitization and awareness creation among residents in the state.
He said: “We have been sensitizing residents in Gombe on the need for peaceful coexistence and for all to live in peace and this is not just as a result of the event in Sokoto, we have been on the radio in the last few weeks calling on people to be law-abiding.
And to support all sorts of peace causes in the state and to furnish the police with useful information that would lead to ensuring a peaceful and crime-free society,” Mahid said.
Also speaking to Daily Sun Al-Amin Ibrahim, the chairman of the Gombe state chapter of the National Youth Council (NYC), assured that his team was engaging youths in the state to ensure peace and progress of the state and the country.
He said: “We have been engaging and talking to our members and other youths to remain calm and be peaceful. We should all respect one another and our religious beliefs so as to continue to enjoy a peaceful Gombe state and Nigeria at large.
“As you are aware, we in Gombe both the Muslims and Christians are respectful of each other’s faith, so we are calling on our people to always work towards sustaining that which has earned us commendations in the country,” Al-Amin said.
