The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced an extension of its verification exercise focused on recovering unpaid import duties on privately owned aircraft that were illegally imported into the country.
In a statement from the Customs National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS informed the public, especially operators of privately-owned aircraft, that the verification period for the recovery of import duties on these aircraft has been extended by one month, now set from Monday, October 14, 2024, to Thursday, November 14, 2024.
This extension aims to further engage with operators who have shown a willingness to regularise their import duties, providing them with an additional opportunity to comply with the necessary regulations.
The NCS emphasised its commitment to ensuring that all illegally imported aircraft adhere to legal requirements, thereby fostering transparency and accountability within the aviation sector.
“In light of this extension, the NCS encourages aircraft operators to seize this opportunity to meet their obligations and avoid potential sanctions arising from non-compliance after the deadline,” he said.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, reaffirmed the Service’s dedication to enforcing the laws governing import duties and upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation sector. He also expressed gratitude for the cooperation and understanding shown by stakeholders during this ongoing exercise.
