The Cross River State governor Senator Bassey Otu says culture and tourism are the key drivers of the economic expansion drive in the State.

Governor Otu disclosed this on Monday while flagging off this year’s Ogoja Carnival in Ogoja Council Secretariat in Northern Cross River State.

The governor who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Peter Odey described the carnival, themed “Traces of Time,” as a vital platform for showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Cross River North Senatorial District and unlocking economic opportunities for the people.

“The carnival aligns with the Otu-led administration’s commitment to promoting tourism and preserving cultural identity.

” I remain resolute in deploying culture and tourism as catalysts for sustainable development”, the deputy governor said.

Dr. Odey also commended the organisers for sustaining the carnival over the years and urged residents to actively participate and maintain peace throughout the festivities.

He also assured them of the state government’s continued support for initiatives that promote grassroots development and cultural sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Governing Council, Ntufam Fidelis Ugbo, applauded the state government for its unwavering support for cultural events.

He noted that such initiatives strengthen social cohesion and drive economic growth.

The colourful event featured parades by competing bands from Obudu, Bekwarra, Ogoja, Yala, and Obanliku Local Government Areas, as well as performances by non-competing bands.

The Carnival Calabar is in its 20th year this year and the Governor Otu administration last year introduced the Ogoja and Ikom Carnivals to deepen participation of local communities in the state.
