CSR: ABUMET spreads hope at JKS Orphanage

Health

ABUMET, one of Nigeria’s leading glass and aluminium solutions companies, brightened the lives of children with disabilities on Wednesday as it carried out its annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) outreach at JKS Home for Children with Special Needs in Kubwa, Abuja. The visit, held in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, reaffirmed the company’s long-standing commitment to community development, compassion, and social impact.

The outreach brought warmth, joy, and relief to the children as ABUMET’s delegation delivered essential food items, hygiene products, household supplies, and other necessities. For the company, the gesture was more than philanthropy—it was a continuation of its mission to support vulnerable groups and strengthen institutions dedicated to protecting society’s most fragile members.

At the Home, which was founded in 2010, the Director, Mrs. Nifeni Ajileye, explained that the facility currently cares for 16 children aged between seven and 30. Each child, she noted, has a unique story and requires specialised attention.

“Some of the kids are orphans; some were abandoned because of their condition,” she said. “These are children who sincerely need our help. Some were brought by the government, some by individuals, and every one of them has a history we can share with you. We provide all forms of care for them; we don’t just keep them here without intervention.”

Ajileye added that the home places great emphasis on physiotherapy, independence training, and emotional support. She expressed deep gratitude to ABUMET for choosing JKS among many similar institutions across Abuja.

“We are very excited, and it is a huge privilege for us,” she said. “We can’t run this home without support from organisations and individuals. For ABUMET to consider us is something we do not take for granted.”

During a guided tour of the facility, the Home’s therapist, Ms. Favour Ibrahim, offered detailed insights into the children’s conditions and the interventions that support their progress. She highlighted that the home caters to children with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, ADHD, and other developmental challenges.

“This is their home,” she said warmly. “Some of the children who arrived unable to do anything for themselves now care for others. Physiotherapy, medical support, and education are helping them thrive.”

She also noted that some of the children attend the JKS Special Needs Academy, a school established to ensure they receive tailored learning opportunities.

For ABUMET, the impact of the visit was just as meaningful. The General Manager, Diemo Schillack, praised the dedication of the caregivers and the resilience of the children.

“It is a good thing happening here,” he said. “Taking care of kids with special needs is intense, and it is good to see what you are doing for the community.”

Schillack emphasised that ABUMET’s CSR efforts are not merely about providing material aid but about inspiring hope and strengthening the fabric of the society in which the company operates. He noted that true corporate success is inseparable from community wellbeing.

Over the years, ABUMET has used its CSR programmes to touch lives beyond the world of glass and steel manufacturing. By reaching out consistently, the company has cemented its role as a socially responsible corporate citizen dedicated to uplifting communities.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities—observed globally on December 3—reminds the world of the 1.3 billion people living with significant disabilities, representing about 16% of the global population. ABUMET’s gesture this year added a meaningful local touch to that global call for inclusion, empathy, and support.
