The Civil Society Organisation, Human Rights Accountability Network (CHRAN), has raised concerns over the non-recognition of Akwa Ibom State University of Education, Afaha Nsit, by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the ongoing 2026/2027 tertiary admissions exercise.

CHRAN noted that although the institution, formerly known as Akwa Ibom State College of Education, was upgraded by the state government in December 2025 to operate as a full-fledged university of education, it has yet to gain recognition from JAMB.

Addressing a press conference in Uyo, the Director of CHRAN, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, highlighted administrative and structural challenges affecting the institution. He pointed out that the 2026 Appropriation Law of the State still references the College of Education instead of the University, creating confusion over the university’s current status.

Isong further observed that the university currently lacks a Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers, and has no Governing Council, master plan, or academic brief. He added that the law establishing the institution remains undisclosed.

The group also criticised the use of “acting Provost and Chief Administrator” positions, describing them as inconsistent with the standard university administrative structure, which is led by a Vice-Chancellor.

“If these anomalies are not urgently addressed, they could further undermine recognition of the institution by JAMB, the National Universities Commission (NUC), Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), and other federal regulatory agencies,” Isong warned.

CHRAN urged the state government to take immediate steps to align the university’s governance and legal framework with national standards to ensure full recognition and smooth integration into Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
