At least 3,500 patients are projected to benefit from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)’s free medical outreach in Cross River State.
Dr George Uzonwanne, the Director of Education, Health and Social Services for the commission, disclosed this at the General Hospital, Akamkpa, while flagging off the exercise.
“We are carrying out a one-week short-term intervention, free of charge, to the people of Cross River State,” he stated. “We are aiming to treat 3,000 to 3,500 patients, but we are focused on data points rather than just patient numbers. One patient may require more than three interventions, so we are looking at between 12,000 to 15,000 data points.”
“Treatments will range from common illnesses like malaria to more complex procedures such as fibroid surgery or general surgery,” he added.

Uzonwanne also stated that a team will be on hand to care for patients before their discharge, and those with severe ailments will also be treated by the commission.
In his address, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said the programme’s objective is to ensure access to good healthcare services by removing barriers.
Dr Ogbuku’s address was presented by Eme Inyang Abia, the head of Education, Health and Social Services in the Cross River State Office of the NDDC.
Abia stated that the NDDC’s health intervention has undergone a remodelling process and is now better equipped to meet the region’s health needs.
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, and Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State APC gubernatorial candidate, witnessed the flag-off of the medical outreach.
The five-day medical outreach by the NDDC is open to patients from across Cross River State and beyond.
