Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu has warned police chiefs across the world that modern criminal networks are increasingly exploiting Artificial Intelligence (AI), encrypted communications, and cyber-enabled platforms to perpetrate cross-border crimes with growing sophistication.
He, however, called for stronger global police cooperation to combat the evolving threat.
The IGP made the call at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOP) 2026, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 7 to 8, 2026. The summit brought together ministers, Inspectors-General of Police, and police chiefs from across the world.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, said IGP Disu explained that while technology presents significant opportunities for law enforcement through artificial intelligence, digital forensics, and geospatial intelligence, public trust remains the foundation of effective policing. He warned that innovation must reinforce transparency, accountability, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.
Disu advocated greater international cooperation, capacity building, and equitable access to digital policing capabilities for all member states, stressing that the benefits of technological advancement should not be limited to a few technologically advanced nations.
Iniedu, who confirmed the development on Wednesday, said Nigeria’s participation at UNCOP 2026 underscores the country’s continued commitment to supporting global peacekeeping efforts and contributing to collective action against transnational crime, terrorism, and cybercrime.
