Convention: Imo APC leaders back call for publicity secretary position

Edo State

From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for its National Convention, ward leaders in Imo State have thrown their weight behind the demand for the National Publicity Secretary position to be zoned to the state.

This call is not new, as various stakeholders and party stalwarts in Imo have consistently argued that the state deserves the slot given its loyalty and contributions to the party’s national success.

Addressing journalists in Owerri on Monday, Chief Charles Osuagwu from Obowo, on behalf of other ward leaders, claimed that the state has not been given the opportunity to produce the Publicity Secretary of the party since 2013, when the party was formed, despite its strong commitment.

He insisted that Imo State, often regarded as the ideological and operational base of the APC in the region, deserves equitable representation in the party’s highest organ.

“Imo has remained unwavering in its loyalty to the APC, delivering solid electoral outcomes and demonstrating remarkable party discipline. It is therefore unfair that for over a decade, no indigene of the state has occupied the position of National Publicity Secretary,” Osuagwu stated.

Osuagwu added that the state boasts a wealth of competent professionals in the fields of media, political communication, and public affairs, many of whom have served as Commissioners of Information, party spokesmen, and media consultants to various administrations.

“This is not about entitlement; it’s about justice and tapping into the best hands for the task of national party communication as we approach a critical election season,” he said.

“If the APC must win the trust of the South East, it must demonstrate inclusion. Giving Imo the slot of the National Publicity Secretary is not just a reward; it is a strategic decision to strengthen the APC brand in the region and give it a face that is acceptable to the people,” he stated.

“Zoning the position to Imo would not only address a long-standing imbalance within the APC but also help consolidate the party’s influence in the South East, a region where it seeks greater traction,” Osuagwu stated.
