The National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party (LP) has dissolved the Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee and reaffirms its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC)  led by Mr Julius Abure.

In a communiqué issued after a virtual NEC meeting held yesterday and signed by the secretary of the NEC Forum, Alhaji Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, the council reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Julius Abure.

The NEC, comprising elected state chairmen and their secretaries, said its decision followed a review of the activities of the caretaker committee, which it described as illegal from inception.

“NEC in session reviewed the activities of the caretaker committee and concluded that it had done incalculable damage to the party,” the statement read, adding that the committee was consequently dissolved.

The council further nullified all notices previously issued to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by the caretaker committee.

As a part of its resolutions, the NEC mandated Abure to commence the process for the conduct of primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, in line with the timetable of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, the council clarified that the notices to INEC would be issued after the resolution of ongoing legal battles, particularly the appeal seeking to overturn a Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu on January 21, 2026 which went in favour of Nenadi Usman.

To this end, NEC directed Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to pursue the appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The council also reaffirmed the legitimacy of the current NWC, noting that it was elected at the party’s national convention held on March 27, 2024, and further endorsed at a NEC meeting on November 28, 2025, under the supervision of INEC.

Meanwhile, in a twist that showed the deepening factional crisis within the party, the sacked caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman also held a physical NEC meeting on the same day at the party’s national secretariat, Abuja.

Details of the outcome of the meeting were not immediately available as of press time, but the parallel gatherings highlighted the ongoing leadership tussle threatening the cohesion of the party.

The latest development is the culmination of months of internal wrangling over leadership and control of party structures.

The emergence of the caretaker committee had earlier sparked controversy, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy.

With both sides holding separate NEC meetings and issuing conflicting directives, the situation could further complicate preparations for the 2027 elections if not urgently resolved.
