The Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of Oneremit, Hammed Adewumi Afenifere, has said compliance and reliability are essential to building trust in cross-border payment services.
Afenifere said businesses expect fast transactions but also need transparent pricing, reliable settlements and effective support when payments encounter problems.
“Speed is the minimum that customers expect. Building for the four kinds of speed founders need, and the compliance rigour that makes them trust you enough to use it, is the harder, more important work,” he said.
Oneremit was established in 2024 to address challenges faced by African businesses making international payments, including unclear foreign exchange charges, settlement delays and difficulties resolving failed transactions.
The company initially focused on Nigerian importers paying suppliers in Asia and Europe before expanding its operations. According to the company, it has processed more than $200m in outgoing transactions and serves over 1,000 businesses.
Oneremit also said it supports transactions in more than 100 currencies and holds regulatory licences in Canada, the United States and Nigeria. It is seeking additional licences in markets including the United Kingdom, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
Afenifere said compliance requirements across different jurisdictions remain a major consideration for businesses involved in international transactions.
To expand its payment infrastructure, Oneremit has partnered with TerraPay to increase its reach across payment corridors and Blockradar for stablecoin infrastructure.
In August 2026, the company hosted a private roundtable involving 40 senior finance executives from Nigeria’s importation, distribution, travel and industrial sectors to discuss settlement-related issues.
Afenifere said the company plans to pursue additional regulatory licences, strengthen infrastructure partnerships and extend its services to other business categories, including agencies, service providers and mid-market exporters.
He maintained that while transaction speed remains important, compliance and reliability are necessary to build lasting confidence among businesses using international payment services.
