In the wake of government’s move to ameliorate the hardship faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidies, a coalition of Civil Society Organizstions (CSOs) has demanded transparency and accountability in the management of fuel subsidy palliatives.

At town hall meeting, yesterday, in Lagos,  the CSOs acknowledged efforts by President Bola Tinubu to provide succor to citizens who are bearing the brunt of astronomical rise in prices of petrol, transport and food stuff that have attended the fuel subsidy removal.

It, however, expressed concerns on the proper management of the palliatives so that it gets to targeted beneficiaries and is not being hoarded or mismanaged.

President, Campaign for Dignity in Governance, Razak Olokoba, who read the resolution of the meeting on behalf of other CSOs said aside the Federal Government, states and local government areas must also work out palliatives for citizens in their jurisdictions.

“The palliatives put in place to soothe the temporary pains being experienced as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy must be monitored by civil society organizations to enhance transparency and accountability,”Olokoba said.

Recognising the economic hardships faced by Nigerians as a result of the policy, Olokoba called for understanding and patience by citizens, saying  the temporary sacrifices being made would pave the way for a better future.

He said it was gladdening to note that within two months of fuel subsidy removal, the country had saved over N1trillion freeing up more funds for other socioeconomic projects.

“The fuel subsidy removal is a bitter pill which we have to to swallow in order to stop the hemorrhaging of the Nigerian State.”

He also commended Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his efforts to address the economic plight of Lagosians.

He also cautioned Nigerians against falling prey to propaganda and lies from groups seeking to exploit the economic situation for political gain. This is even as he emphasized the importance of defending and sustaining democracy through legitimate means and peaceful assembly.

“We say no to the breakdown of law and order ion the guise of exercise of fundamental rights of citizens and call on security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities.”

The CSOs advocated the welfare of Nigerians and the preservation of democratic principles in the face of economic challenges, calling for responsible governance and prudent management of public resources.

CSOs present at the meeting include Centre for Social and Economic Rights; Centre for 21st Century Issues; Humanity Services Project; Frontline Economic and Social Research Centre; Campaign Against Impunity and Domestic Violence, among others.
