The push for alternative fuel sources in Nigeria has gained momentum as experts and users alike pinpoint the benefits of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles. CNG, announced as a safer, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fuel, is gaining waves among drivers amid the rising cost of petrol.
Speaking in Abuja, a CNG technician, John Peter, reassured Nigerians about the safety of the gas cylinders used in these vehicles, addressing concerns about potential fire hazards during accidents. “The cylinder has zero risk of fire. Most people fear the probability of fire when there’s an accident, but we assure you that it’s completely safe,as we have even tested it with a match stick in the presence of most buyers for clarity,” the technician said. He further clarified the distinction between Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and CNG, emphasizing that while LPG is compressed liquid, CNG is a compressed gas, making it safer and more efficient. However, challenges remain, including the high cost of importing CNG cylinders, which could lead to price variations across regions. “We are importing the cylinders from outside Nigeria, so the price might differ depending on the center,” the technician added. Users of CNG-powered vehicles have also shared their experiences. Zion Ugwu, a CNG user, highlighted its positive impact on engine performance. “Before, when I drove 200 kilometers, my engine oil would reduce significantly. With CNG, things are much better now. Considering the current price of petrol, switching to CNG is a wise decision for cost-effectiveness,” he said.

Another user, Abdul Wahab, praised the affordability and long-term benefits of CNG. “The gas is cheap and saves your car the stress.However, the cylinder takes up the space in your trunk. The major issue is the limited availability of refilling stations. You might need to travel long distances to refill, but the federal government has promised to address this by expanding the network of CNG stations.”
As the government ramps up its efforts to promote CNG adoption and improve infrastructure, Nigerians are cautiously optimistic about its potential to reduce fuel costs and enhance vehicle performance, while addressing environmental concerns. For now, users and stakeholders are urging swift action to ensure the widespread availability of CNG facilities across the country.
