The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL) is set to host its first conference under the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, with a focus on advancing patient-centered care through precision in diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical practice.

The three-day conference, themed “Precision in Practice: Integrating Diagnostics, Therapeutics, and Clinical Insights for Patient-Centred Care,” will take place from June 23 to 25, 2026, at the institution’s campus in Idi Araba, Lagos.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Provost of the College, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, described the conference as a strategic milestone in repositioning Basic Clinical Sciences as a key driver of healthcare delivery, innovation, and improved outcomes.

He noted that although the faculty is less than a year old, it represents a deliberate effort to align medical training, research, and service delivery with future healthcare needs. Oremosu stressed the importance of bridging the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application to enhance healthcare quality and reduce mortality rates.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Cerba Lancet Nigeria Laboratories, Dr. Olayemi Dawodu, described the initiative as a forward-looking effort aimed at redefining the role of Basic Clinical Sciences in modern healthcare delivery.

Dawodu said precision, though often perceived as a simple concept, lies at the heart of ongoing transformations in healthcare. According to her, achieving meaningful patient outcomes requires the deliberate integration of diagnostics, therapeutics, and clinical insight into a cohesive system rather than operating in silos.

She noted that the conference theme reflects global healthcare trends while remaining responsive to local realities, adding that the most impactful advancements in the industry are driven not only by new technologies but also by how effectively data informs decisions and outcomes.

She also highlighted plans to extend the conference’s impact beyond academic discussions through community outreach initiatives and to honour retired and senior academics whose contributions laid the foundation for the Faculty.

Chairman of the conference, Dr. Titi Adeyemo, said the event would feature plenary sessions, panel discussions, and multidisciplinary engagements designed to foster collaboration across the healthcare value chain.

Adeyemo explained that the conference aims to address gaps in precision diagnostics and therapeutics, ultimately improving patient outcomes through a more coordinated healthcare system. She added that it would also showcase innovations in medical training, including the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning, alongside integrated clinical training models.

Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty, Fatimah Abdulkareem, said the conference marks the Faculty’s first major public demonstration of its vision to drive innovation, impactful research, and globally relevant medical education.

Abdulkareem explained that while the Faculty is newly established, it builds on decades of academic excellence and professional training. She said the conference is designed not only for presentations but also as a platform for translating ideas into action, fostering partnerships, and generating practical solutions.

In his remarks, the Executive Director of Health Business Academy for Africa, Abdulwasiu Busari, said the event signals a shift towards more integrated and outcome-driven healthcare systems.

Busari noted that the future of healthcare would depend on effectively linking science, systems, and strategy, adding that the academy’s partnership would ensure sustained impact through follow-up training programmes and strategic collaborations beyond the conference.

The organisers expressed confidence that the conference would contribute significantly to professional discourse and improve healthcare delivery across Nigeria and the wider African region.
