The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has appealed to Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo and the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Echeng Echeng, to order discrete and in depth investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the fire disaster at Onitsha Drug market, in order to forestall future occurrence.
The group decried the horrendous chemical explosion at Ogbogu section of the Bridge Head Market which led to deaths of some traders and injured others.
Chairman, Anambra State Chapter of CLO, Mr. Vincent Ezekwueme, sympathised with the bereaved and all those who lost their goods, properties, as well as the market leadership and President General of Bridge Head Markets, Chinedu Ezekwike.
“We appeal to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, State Emergency Management Agency, political class and public spirited individuals and stakeholders to contribute towards ameliorating the pathetic predicaments of the victims.
“Worthy of commendation is the quick intervention of the Anambra State government through the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyeka Ibezim, Fire Fighting Services, led by Dr. Martin Agbili, and security personnel for beefing up security and restoring normalcy.
“May God accept the souls of those who lost their lives and give grace and fortitude to the bereaved to bear the irreparable losses. We appeal to government and market leadership to devise more proactive safety and security measures in our markets,” Ezekwueme said.
