Clerics have urged Nigerians to make regular medical checkups a priority, describing routine health screening as essential to good health and overall well-being.
The call was made yesterday by pastors of The Potter’s House of Lagos, a church under the House of Freedom led by Apostle Tony Rapu, during a five-kilometre fitness walk organised by the church.
Speaking with journalists at the event, tagged “Walk for Life,” the Resident Pastor of The Potter’s House of Lagos, Pastor Emmanuel Uzugbo, said periodic medical examinations help in the early detection of diseases, improve treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of complications.
According to him, many health challenges could be prevented or effectively managed if individuals adopt preventive healthcare habits.
He emphasised that physical wellness enables people to function optimally both in the house of God and in society.
“People should maintain fitness, eat balanced diets and adopt healthy lifestyles for both physical and spiritual well-being,” Uzugbo said.
He also called on Nigerians to embrace peace and unity, speak positively about the country and pray for national progress, noting that Nigeria is a blessed nation that requires the political will of its leaders to act in the interest of all citizens.
Other pastors, including Pastors Sesan Ibitoye and Samuel Eluka, urged individuals, families and communities to take personal responsibility for their health, stressing that caring for the body is both a moral and social obligation.
The coordinator of the fitness walk, Olufunke Adu, said the initiative was aimed at impacting the Surulere community and giving back to society in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Some members of the congregation expressed joy over the exercise, saying the walk energised them physically and spiritually as they also engaged in gymnastic activities and prayers. The walk covered the route from Iponri to the National Stadium and back to Costain, Lagos.
