| A coalition of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)-accredited observers have called on security agencies to remain neutral and transparent in the discharge of their responsibilities during Saturday’s supplementary governorship election in Kano State.
The leader of the coalition of 13 civil society groups, Ambassador Chinyere Manukwem, who spoke the NUJ press centre in Kano on Friday appreciated INEC in the state for its preparedness to conduct a hitch-free supplementary election. The coalition also charged the political class to caution its supporters on the need to maintain peace and order during and after the election. According to her, “we have interacted with the electorate, critical stakeholders, security agencies and INEC to ascertain the level of preparedness of the election.” She acknowledged that “INEC is fully prepared for a free, fair and credible election as the electoral materials are being taken to all the affected areas. “We call on security agencies to abide by the electoral laws of the land to remain neutral and also protect the citizenry during and after the election. “We call on political leaders and their faithful to ensure a peaceful election and to respect the electoral law as they go out to perform their civic responsibilities and also be reminded of the peace accord signed by the parties. “We also call on the electorate to go out en masse and cast their votes and remain law-abiding throughout the process. “Finally, we commend the state government for ensuring a peaceful atmosphere so far for a peaceful election.”
