As part of this year’s celebration of Citibank’s annual Global Community Day, Government College Senior Secondary School library, Victoria Island, Lagos was renovated to serve 1,750 students over the next five years. The facility was commissioned at a colourful ceremony, which also featured the presentation from Citibank financial literacy and entrepreneurship programmes.
The event was held with thrillers from 45 Bloomberg Media Initiative for Africa (BMIA Executive Training Programme) delegates and alumni, and ALI Media Fellows in Lagos and Nairobi, who joined more than 85,000 Citibank and Bloomberg volunteers around the world, from Hong Kong to Mexico City, and New York to London, to make a positive impact in their local communities.
In Lagos, 24 BMIA volunteers enjoyed a presentation from Citibank management on financial literacy and entrepreneurship, and helped in cleaning and painting a newly renovated library that Citibank unveiled and presented later that day. The library, located at the Government College Senior Secondary School, would promote reading among students of the school.
In Kenya, 21 BMIA volunteers participated in mentorship sessions with high school students from charity partner, Junior Achievement. The discussions were themed around career choices, boosting confidence and proper time management to excel both academically and professionally. In addition, Citibank Kenya donated inspirational books to students on the day.
Philanthropy and volunteering are integral parts of the Bloomberg culture started by our founder, Michael R. Bloomberg. Citibank was elated to partner in this noble act , in an age and clime where almost everything is fought for and obtained at a reasonable fee.
