Christmas in terrorists’ den (2)

Mama baby: Neighbour! Pastor!! Come and see what I am seeing.

Neighbour: Mama baby,  what happened? Hope snake did not enter your  room as it did in pastor’s place last night.

Mama baby: Baby is back ( Mama baby rolls on the ground in tears of joy).

Neighbour: Thank God for His goodness and mercy (baby walks in the compound limping).

Mama baby: (runs and hugs baby) What happened to you and why are you limping?.

Baby: mummy, please take me to the hospital, I escaped from the forest with three other girls. It is a gory tale. I saw and passed through hell.

Neighbour: Thank God you are back alive. what happened? How were you abducted by the terrorists?

Baby: It is God that saved me. The terrorists killed three of their victims in my presence. We were 25 holding a  meeting when suddenly we saw some rough looking men broke into our hall where we were holding the meeting all armed. Their leader asked us not to make noise, warning that if we did,  they would shoot us.They then marched us to a waiting truck parked at the gate. One of them started tying us up and blindfolding us.This happened in a jiffy. The one that was sitting beside me put his hand inside my dress and was touching my breast. I suspect that was what they did to other girls too. Suddenly the vehicle started moving at a high speed  and they were shouting in Hausa language as many motorcycles were escorting them. After a long ride, they asked us to come down and then removed our blindfolds. They then started marching us into the thick forest. We walked for almost two hours. Unfortunately, the girl in front of me was always falling down because it was very dark in the middle of the night and the terrorist assigned to lead us  threatened to shoot her if she continued to disrupt the movement. When we eventually arrived at the kidnappers’ camp, we discovered that they were using only touch light to illuminate the dense forest. We also discovered that they had no hut. The terrorists- all well armed- were so many that I was unable to count them.Their  leader was holding two objects which I thought were sticks but which  to my horror I later discovered were the femur bones of a human being. Each time he gave an order he banged the two bones on the ground, warning that if we didn’t behave well or if we attempted to escape, our bones will be next he wil be holding. This threat instilled fear in all of us.

Food was another horrible nightmare.we ate only once a day and the food was worse than what pigs eat. I don’t know where they got the food but I suspect they went to town to get it.There was a bucket of water we all- including the terrorists- put our mouths in to drink from. While we, the captives slept on the floor the terrorists slept on the trees like monkeys with their guns. They raped any girl they wanted since they tied our hands most of the time, we were helpless. Our tears did not move them. My own tears didnt move the six of them that forcefully, brutally raped me six times. They raped us any time they felt like. It was a horrible experience.

Mama baby:( sobbing)  So how did you escape, my daughter?

Baby: It was in the middle of the night.  They had just gone to bury three of their victims and they called the person that was keeping watch over me to make sure he was attentive. He did not know I was pretending to be sleeping, so immediately he left,  I took to my heels. I ran through out the mid night until I ran into  a hunter who was setting trap for animals. He had wanted to shoot me mistaking me for an animal but when he noticed I was a human being he lowered his gun. He noticed I was  bleeding profusely; he took me to his house and the wife cleaned me up and advise me to go to the hospital when I get home. They gave me money to enter transport to get home.

Neighbour: This is really shocking and unbelievable. It is sad that this is happening in our country.

Pastor: Baby you are back.

Neighbour: Welcome Pastor, baby has been narrating her ordeal in the den of terrorist. It is very unfortunate that people went for a conference and later found themselves in the den of terrorists.

Pastor: Mama baby, please take her to the hospital. I will contribute to her medical bill ).

Mama baby: Thank you pastor, God bless you.

Neighbour: Pastor did you hear there was another kidnapping in the neighbouring village?

Pastor: kidnapping is very becoming very rampant and even the government is fully aware of the situation although they are trying their best only that their effort so far is not encouraging enough. How can anyone convince me that the combined forces of the Nigeria police and Army can not put a final stop to the activities of terrorists around the country? Do you realize that the country has been under the siege of terrorist for over 15 years? We don’t have the statistics of the victims, even the government don’t know and don’t have the number which is very unfortunate.

Neighbour: (cuts in) It is rather unfortunate that we are in this situation in this country.A former President who was a military general could not put an end to the activities of the terrorists instead the activities multiplied during his administration.Today a civilian is President and a former police officer is his National Security Adviser, I would suggest that the President should appoint for a change,  a retired intelligent security officer as the NSA. Also, there is the urgent need for the President to re-organize his cabinet because there are many ideal and docile hands there, including some of his aides. Can you imagine a Commander -in- Chief appealing to his security chiefs to do the needful as it concerns ending the insurgency and kidnapping in the country.

Pastor: I was furiously angry when I heard the appealing instead of ordering his service chiefs with a matching order and a deadline to end this nonsense. In our church, over 30 people have been killed in our branches around the country. We are praying the president will live up to our expectations.

Neighbour: Pastor, you forgot to pray for baby before the mother took her to the hospital. I also  think we should not celebrate Christmas this year,  instead we should rename it Nigerian Christmas of prayer. For the first time, the country should declare the season as a season of prayer while our security forces will join hands with the Armed forces of neighbouring West Africa countries to end this insurgency and completely flush out every traces of insecurity after which the President should completely reorganize and restructure the security architecture of the country.

Pastor: That is beautiful! May God help our leaders. I forgot to wish you happy Christmas.

(Concluded)

Postscript: The characters in this conversation are imaginary, fictitious. The conversation is also fictional…just to illustrate a hypothetical kidnap scenario given the security challenges Nigeria is facing.
