Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen is recovering in hospital after collapsing during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, forcing the match to be abandoned and sending shockwaves through the football world.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute in Odense, with television footage showing Eriksen clutching his chest before falling to the ground. Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch as players from both teams formed a protective circle around the 34-year-old while treatment was administered.

The Danish Football Association later confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and responding after the incident. Team doctor Morten Boesen said the midfielder briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly and was able to leave the pitch under his own power. He has since undergone further medical examinations to determine the cause of the collapse.

Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg described the moment as a major shock for players on the field, praising the swift response of medical staff and teammates. Denmark coach Brian Riemer said the team’s immediate focus was supporting Eriksen and ensuring the well-being of everyone affected by the incident.

The collapse inevitably revived memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during the 2021 European Championship match against Finland, when he received life-saving CPR on the pitch before being fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). Despite that ordeal, the former Manchester United, Brentford and Inter Milan midfielder returned to professional football and currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg.

Sunday’s incident prompted an outpouring of concern from fans, players and football officials across Europe, with many expressing relief after confirmation that Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition. Further medical updates are expected once doctors complete a full assessment of his condition.
