From Olanrewaju Lawal, Birnin Kebbi
The Kebbi State government has declared its intention to punish and sanction any parents who violate children’s rights and privileges.
During this year’s Children’s Day celebration at the Haliru Abdul Stadium, Birnin Kebbi, Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Umar Abubakar, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting children’s rights.
Idris stated that the current administration’s foundation is built on education and that children are the main focus. He highlighted the importance of celebrating Children’s Day to create awareness and appreciate the indispensable roles children play as the future of society.
“Parents, teachers, guardians, and other education stakeholders are reminded that children have rights and privileges that must be protected and promoted by all,” he said. “And anyone who oversteps these rights will be sanctioned accordingly.”
The Governor insisted that all children, regardless of sex, gender, or physical challenges, have the right to education and stressed that no one should deny them their rights.
He disclosed that to improve the standard of education in the state, his administration has continued to renovate classrooms and directed the immediate employment of 2,000 teachers.
Idris urged all stakeholders to continue supporting children’s rights and appealed to children to shun all social vices.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande, noted that the celebration of Children’s Day serves as a reminder to promote child rights and privileges.
She highlighted that the current administration, through her Ministry, has captured all students across the state in a biometric database to ensure effective decision-making regarding feeding and examinations.
Bande commended the Governor for the advance payment of the 2024 WAEC fees for all students in the state, emphasizing that it will allow students to write their exams with ease.
She urged parents to instil good values in their children, while teachers should revive the reading culture among students at all levels and commit to quality education.
“As for the students, you should be good citizens and must importantly, be responsible indigenes and good ambassadors of Kebbi State wherever you find yourselves,” she said.
