Ismail Adebayo, a promising Nigerian chemical engineer, has been named the winner of the 2022 Nigerian National Prize for Innovation, securing the grand prize of ₦1.5 million for his groundbreaking research into advanced biofuels.
The award, presented by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, recognizes innovators whose work demonstrates significant potential for national development and sustainability. Adebayo’s winning project focused on enhancing the efficiency of biodiesel using a novel blend of ferrocene nanoparticles and hydrogen enrichment. His research aims to develop cleaner alternative fuels for diesel engines, a critical step towards reducing Nigeria’s carbon footprint and dependency on fossil fuels.
“This award is a tremendous honour and a validation of the hard work and dedication that has gone into this research,” Adebayo stated. “My goal has always been to apply chemical engineering principles to solve real-world problems. Developing sustainable energy solutions is not just a scientific pursuit; it’s a necessity for our nation’s future.”
Adebayo, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and a Research Assistant at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the same University, has consistently focused on energy innovation. His research has shown that his specialized biofuel blend can significantly increase brake thermal efficiency while drastically reducing harmful emissions like carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and hydrocarbons (HC) in unmodified diesel engines.
Officials praised the work’s potential for commercial application, particularly in the transportation and power generation sectors. The prize committee highlighted the project’s alignment with national goals of promoting indigenous technology and fostering a green economy. Adebayo plans to use the prize money to further refine his fuel formulation and explore pathways for scalable production.
