Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has urged Nigerians, particularly traders, to desist from spraying, hawking, mutilating or counterfeiting the naira, describing the currency as a “critical national symbol” that embodies the nation’s economic identity.
Speaking at the Central Bank Fair on Thursday at Hotel Seventeen, Kaduna and represented by the Ag. Director, Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, Cardoso said the event provided a platform to engage the public on CBN policies aimed at sustainable economic growth.
Themed: “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development,” the fair focused on the role of modern payment systems in boosting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and other sectors essential for price stability and economic advancement.
“I encourage you to respect and keep the naira clean. Do not spray, hawk, mutilate or counterfeit the Naira. It is our critical national symbol,” he stressed.
He added, “The core objective of this engagement is to sensitise members of the public on how the Bank’s policies enhance their lives and livelihood and contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy.”
The fair featured detailed presentations on key CBN operations, including innovations in Nigeria’s payment systems, microfinance sector developments, foreign exchange market updates, and measures to protect financial consumers.
“Our Management is committed to promoting productivity, financial inclusiveness, and delivering on our mandate of monetary and price stability,” the Governor added.
Highlighting the impact of these efforts, he noted significant inflows of foreign investments, positive trade balances, and remarkable progress in financial inclusion.
The CBN Fair offered participants a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of the naira, explore emerging financial tools, and appreciate the Bank’s role in driving Nigeria’s economic growth.
