An Agriculturist and Chairman of Eurobase Consult Limited Don Ekesiobi, has said the problem affecting food production was beyond insecurity.
Ekesiobi, who addressed journalists yesterday ahead of a 2-day special agro export, in Abuja, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, regretted that Nigerians still practice subsistent farming when most countries spend billions of dollars investing in mechanised farming.
He said: “The problem of food insufficiency in Nigeria not insecurity but lack of mechanisation. Most Nigerians still practice subsistent farming. That is not healthy for us as a country.
“We must invest in mechanisation, because it is the right way to go.”
Speaking on the reason for the upcoming mechanisation conference, he said it was targeted at mapping out strategies to deploy tractors and agro inputs to boost food production.
“It is important to note that the government cannot do it aloe with the support of private participation.
“There is a need for us to come together as a nation to brainstorm and provide immediate solutions in the form of short long-term
“The 2-day programme will provide a great opportunity to: Highlight the importance of sustainable food security and the role of mechanization
“Showcase a wide range of agricultural equipment and machinery and at enhancing productivity, efficiency, and sustainability in agriculture;
“Provide a platform for farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and industry experts to exchange knowledge, ideas, and best practices; Demonstrate the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and promoting technological advancements in agriculture;
“Interactive demonstrations and presentations on innovative agricultural practices and mechanization solutions; Networking opportunities with leading suppliers, manufacturers, and industry professionals;
“Panel discussions addressing key challenges and opportunities in sustainable agriculture and opportunity to learn the latest advancements in agricultural technology, network with industry experts, and commitment to sustainable food security,” he said.
