National Christian Elders’ Forum (NCEF) has expressed shock at the visit of  the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle,  and some officials  on a “congratulatory” visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on his ‘purported’ victory in the  last presidential election.

The Christan elders said such visit was a total “subjudice” as the determination of winner of the 2019 presidential election is still being contested in court.

The group added that it was, therefore, premature and presumptuous to congratulate president Buhari for “winning” an election that is being contested in court.

Chairman, NCEF, Solomon Asemota, said in a statement, in Abuja, yesterday, that the visit to the president was not in the interest of Nigerian Christians.

He said: “It is well known the indifference of the Buhari administration to attacks and murder of Christians across Nigeria. This indifference led many, including foreign observers, to conclude that the Buhari’s administration is complicit in the genocide that is taking place in Nigeria.

“The action of the CAN president was a further confirmation of all the protests and petitions of NCEF in 2018, querying the faithfulness of Dr. Ayokunle to Christ and his church.”

He wondered why CAN could not wait for the report of over 1,000 election observers it deployed across Nigeria, before rushing to the Presidential Villa to congratulate Buhari.

Asemota urged the  CAN leadership to retrace its steps and support the course of Christians who, he noted, are being killed, displaced and attacked daily by “killer” herdsmen in different parts of  the country.

Meanwhile,  chairman of CAN in the northern part of the country,  Reverend Yakubu Pam,  has tasked newly-elected  governors in the region to work assiduously towards improving standard of living in the zone.

He lamented  that the region is backward in several spheres of life and urged them  to work in unity towards the development of the region.

Pam, in a statement, in Jos, urged northern governors to hit the ground  running  in their respective  states; and address the plight of the people.

He also urged them to halt the skirmishes in some parts of the zone.

“Each governor in the North must, as a matter  of seriousness, take  the issue  of security  of lives and properties  in their respective states serious, to avoid the ugly incidences  of the recent past where many  lives and properties perished.”
