To mark World Food Safety Day 2025, Dr. Malvis Humphrey of the London Professional Training Centre, with the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, spearheaded a dynamic campaign across Lagos and Edo states to promote safe food practices and public health awareness.
The week-long initiative featured high-impact workshops in both cities, drawing a wide range of participants from across the food chain. Farmers, chefs, culinary experts, food critics, housewives, food industry professionals and representatives of regulatory bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) were all in attendance. Government officials and food manufacturers also joined the discussion, creating a well-rounded forum for addressing Nigeria’s food safety challenges.
Panel discussions explored practical and strategic solutions, including calls for better education for street food vendors, stricter regulatory enforcement, and innovation in food handling within homes and small businesses. The collaborative tone fostered shared responsibility and emphasised food safety as a collective effort.
In addition to the workshops, the campaign team conducted community outreach through market sensitisation and school programmes. Hundreds of traders, students and households were engaged using flyers, demonstrations and public messages delivered in local dialects and Pidgin English, ensuring inclusivity and cultural relevance.
Through education and grassroots mobilisation, the initiative empowered participants with simple but effective food safety knowledge, reinforcing Nigeria’s broader commitment to reducing food-borne diseases and improving public health.
Dr. Humphrey’s leadership and the Federal Ministry’s endorsement gave the campaign added credibility and visibility, leaving a lasting impact on communities and stakeholders alike. The World Food Safety Day 2025 celebration served as a timely reminder that safe food is not a luxury but a right and a shared responsibility.
