There is renewed hope for Shooting Stars ahead of the 2026/27 continental season as the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football is set to meet next week to discuss a proposal that could increase the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League, BSNSports.com.ng reports

Shooting Stars finished third in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season, with Rangers and Rivers United securing Nigeria’s two CAF Champions League slots, while the Oluyole Warriors qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup.

However, the Ibadan-based club could still have a chance of featuring in Africa’s premier club competition if CAF approves an expansion of the tournament.

The proposal was submitted by the Egyptian Football Association, which has officially requested that CAF increase the number of participating clubs in both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

The proposal is expected to be one of the key agenda items when CAF’s Executive Committee meets in the coming days.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has previously demonstrated a willingness to consider proposals from member associations, making the request one that will be closely monitored by clubs across the continent.

Should the proposal receive approval, Shooting Stars could earn a place in the CAF Champions League despite finishing third in the domestic league.

However, no official decision has been taken by CAF, with the matter set to be deliberated at the upcoming Executive Committee meeting.
