CAF Champions League: More woes for Nigeria as Rangers crash out
By Monica Iheakam
It was more woes for Nigeria yesterday, as her remaining representative in the CAF Champions League, Rangers International of Enugu crashed out despite their face saving 2-1 win over visiting Zamalek of Egypt in Enugu.
This misfortune is coming barely 24 hours after Rivers United were bundled out of the same competition by Al- Merreikh of Sudan.
The Nigeria Professional Football League champions were defeated 4-1 in the first leg last week at the Military Stadium, Cairo, thus crashing out 5-3 on aggregate.
The Flying Antelopes who needed a three-goal margin to progress left business till late in the first half to record their first goal through Tope Olusesi in the 45th minute . Basan Morsi however restored parity for the Egyptians in the 71st minute and Godwin Aguda then made it 2-1 for Rangers with only two minutes left of play.
The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) defending champions, and their runners-up Rivers United of Port Harcourt, will now drop to the play-offs of the CAF Confederation Cup where they will hope to reach the group stage of the second-tier CAF club competition.
