Bauchi State government has uncovered massive fraud in the state civil service and saved the sum of N225 million from its workers verification exercise from November 2019 to June 2020.
This was disclosed by a member of the Senator Adamu Gumba led committee on bank verification number (bvn) of civil servants on government payroll, Mr Abdon Gin, at a press conference in Bauchi on Wednesday.
Gin, who is also the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Civil Service, explained that 41, 448 workers had issues with their BVN.
He said the committee eventually worked on 29, 000 workers with BVN issues, adding that, “a large number of them are still untouched out of the total workforce of the state”
Gin who was a former Head of Service announced that the committee discovered that 312 deceased Local Government Pensioners were on the nominal and payroll.
“The monthly value is N 9,921,511.48 kobo. They have been permanently removed from both the nominal roll and payroll,” he said.
Gin, who opined that lack of punishment was the major factor fueling corruption in the service, said no fewer than nine deceased State Pensioners were drawing monthly salary totaling N 23452191, adding that, “they have been permanently removed from both the nominal roll and payroll”
He disclosed that 11 civil servants were discovered through their July – September, 2019 Bank Statements to be collecting double salaries on Government payroll.
“The Head of Civil Service to discipline them accordingly,” Gin added
He said that a total of 112 State and 284 Local Governments employees were not cleared by the Committee due to death, overage/due for retirement, failed to appear for physical verification or abscondment with a monthly value of N 20,137,095.27 kobo.
He said his committee disengaged and removed from the payroll 23 State and Local Government staff discovered illegally replaced costing the Government N66947957 monthly.
“Four civil servants discovered through their July – September, 2019 Bank Statements to be collecting salaries from the State and other Organizations. The Head of Civil Service to discipline them accordingly,” he said.
“The Discovery and removal from the payroll of 11 State Civil Servants who had exited the Service but still active on the payroll costing the Government N1,366,077.02 monthly
“Discovery and removal from the payroll of 83 Local Government staff who had exited the Service but still active on the payroll costing the Government N 3,546,271.24 monthly
“Discovery and removal from the payroll of 48 deceased Local Government staff during the physical verification costing the Government N1,999, 803.90
“Discovery of 32 staff/pensioner with overpayments (July – September, 2019) which shortchanged the Government of N 4,892,237.85 monthly, ” he said.
