Veteran broadcaster and music executive, Benson Idonije, has praised Nigeria’s continued leadership in Afrobeat music, saying the country remains the driving force behind the genre’s global success.
Idonije, who is widely known as the first manager of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and grandfather of Grammy-winning star Burna Boy, made the remarks during activities marking his 90th birthday celebration in Lagos.
Reflecting on the evolution of Afrobeat from its early days to its current international appeal, Idonije said Nigeria continues to set the pace for the genre and remains its undisputed cultural home.
“Nigeria is leading as far as Afrobeat is concerned,” he said.

“The genre was born here, and Nigerian artistes are still at the forefront of taking it to the world.”
The veteran music figure noted that the global recognition enjoyed by contemporary Nigerian artistes demonstrates the enduring influence of Afrobeat and the country’s rich musical heritage.
According to him, the growing international demand for Nigerian music is evidence that Afrobeat has moved beyond being a local sound to becoming a major force in global entertainment.
Idonije also commended the new generation of musicians for building on the foundation laid by pioneers such as Fela, saying their achievements have helped introduce African culture and creativity to wider audiences.
His comments come at a time when Nigerian artistes continue to dominate international charts, headline major festivals, and secure prestigious awards across the world.
