In a surprising development, Professor Chinedu Mmon, the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, has tendered his resignation from Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s cabinet, citing toxicity within the government.

Mmon, known to be a staunch supporter of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, becomes the third reappointed Commissioner to step down from his position.

Prior to Mmon’s resignation, Professor Zacchaeus Adangor, the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and Isaac Kamalu, the former Commissioner for Finance, had also resigned from their posts a few weeks earlier.

Adangor and Kamalu’s resignations came following Fubara’s directive to redeploy them to different ministries, namely the Ministry of Special Duties (Governor’s Office) and Ministry for Employment Generation and Empowerment, respectively.

In a letter dated May 25, 2024, addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Mmon expressed his reasons for resigning, highlighting the toxic atmosphere in his current workspace.

The excerpt from his letter reads: “I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Rivers State Executive Council as the Honourable Commissioner for Education with effect from today, May 15, 2024. It is a truism that a calm and friendly environment would stimulate efficient service delivery and enhanced productivity. It is, however, unfortunate to note that my current workspace has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favorable environment to enable me to realize my set targets for the education sector in the state.”

This latest resignation adds to the growing concerns over the work environment within Fubara’s cabinet, raising questions about the stability and effectiveness of the state government moving forward.
